The Grunwald Gallery of Art is pleased to announce Media Life, an exhibition of drawings and animations by Dutch artist Miek van Dongen. This exhibition will open to the public with a reception Friday, August 24, 6:00 – 8:00pm and be on view through Saturday, September 15, 2012.

The Media Life project is a collaborative effort by IU faculty member Mark Deuze and Dutch artist Miek van Dongen. The exhibition will feature a combination of drawings and animations by van Dongen that have been included in Media Life, authored by Mark Deuze and published by Polity Press, Cambridge, UK. A gallery talk by Miek van Dongen will be held on Wednesday, September 12 at 6pm at the Grunwald Gallery.

Mark Deuze states “Through the years more of our time is spent using media, and multitasking our media has become a regular feature of everyday life. In addition, consuming media for most people randomly takes place alongside producing media. It is perhaps time we move beyond wondering whether all of this is good or bad for us, and accept it as part of our environment. In other words: we should think of our lives as lived in rather than with media.”

Mark Deuze is Associate Professor at Indiana University's Department of Telecommunications in Bloomington, United States. From 2007 to 2011 Mark has held a joint appointment as Professor of Journalism and New Media at Leiden University, The Netherlands (his home country). As a journalist he has written for newspapers and websites in South Africa, The Netherlands, and the United States. His research interests include the role of new media in everyday life, and the management of careers and firms in the creative industries. Publications of his work include seven books (three in Dutch) as well as over fifty articles in scholarly journals.
Miek van Dongen is a renowned multimedia artist and web developer from The Netherlands. Her work includes, but is not limited to drawings, animations, and video. Throughout her work Miek uses 'classic' (paper and pencil) as well as digital techniques. She has done collaborative work with audio artists, producing a series of audio‐video performances (see: www.tinyloops.com). Her exhibitions, installations and performances have appeared in galleries throughout her home country, are archived online, and are part of the permanent collections of curated sites such as The Streaming Video Festival (www.streamingfestival.com) and Artists In The World (www.artistintheworld.com).

This exhibit and events are sponsored by the College Arts & Humanities Institute.
