Event

The term Malagan refers to both a series of rites held in honor of the dead on the island of New Ireland as well as the masks and figures associated with these rites. The forms, patterns, and motifs used on these objects are "copyrighted" by specific families and individuals. Emma Kessler, curatorial assistant for the Arts of Africa, the South Pacific, and the Americas, will discuss these rites using three remarkable examples in the museum's permanent collection.

TIME: 12:15 p.m.

WHERE: Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University, 1133 E. Seventh St., Bloomington. 855-5445
